A platform to collect and compare cultural statistics globally

The UIS has developed a new framework for cultural statistics based on consultations with experts and policymakers from around the world. It was specifically designed to help countries at all stages of development create their own surveys to track the flows of their cultural goods and services.

Our goal is to lay the foundation for new surveys and indicators to measure the socio-economic impact of culture and the diversity of expressions. The UIS is currently collecting statistics related to the film industry in its Member States. At the same time, we are developing methodologies to measure key issues, such as cultural participation, which encompasses a wide range of activities, including a visit to a national heritage site, learning to play a musical instrument or involvement in a traditional festival.

 What's New?

Measuring cultural participation
This new handbook presents current trends in measuring cultural participation and is the second of a series of guides based on the concepts set out in the 2009 UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics.
Measuring the economic contribution of cultural industries
Building on UNESCO's 2009 Framework for Cultural Statistics, this handbook provides a review and assessment of current methodologies.
Launch of the 2012 survey of cinema statistics
The UIS has launched its latest data collection on feature film statistics for reference years 2010 and 2011 in 203 Member States and territories.
Measuring the diversity of cultural expressions
This technical paper presents the results of two studies commissioned by the UIS to evaluate the feasibility of using the Stirling Index of Diversity to measure cultural expressions. The Stirling Index is recognized as one of the most robust methodologies in this field.
A roadmap for cultural statistics

How can we begin to measure the socio-economic impact of cultural industries or the diversity of cultural expressions? In this interview, Lydia Deloumeaux, a UIS specialist on culture, highlights the challenges of implementing the 2009 UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics.
